The Anti-Breakage Hat is an investment in your hair. The care you give it determines how long it maintains the properties that make it worth that investment. A few specific rules protect the silk, the silver ion treatment, and the hat's structure through years of daily wear.

How to wash the Anti-Breakage Hat

Hand wash in cool water

Fill a clean basin or sink with cool water — not warm, not hot. Silk fiber is protein-based, and heat causes protein fibers to contract and distort. Hot water washing is the most common way to permanently damage the silk interior of a silk-lined hat. Cool water (under 30°C, room temperature or slightly below) is safe for silk protein structure and for the technical suede exterior.

Use a gentle, pH-neutral detergent

Harsh detergents strip the natural sericin proteins from silk fiber and degrade the fiber structure over repeated washing. Use a detergent specifically formulated for silk or delicates — Woolite, The Laundress Silk & Cashmere, or a comparable gentle formula. Add a small amount (half a teaspoon) to the cool water. Do not apply detergent directly to the hat before diluting.

Submerge and gently agitate — do not scrub

Place the hat in the basin and gently press and squeeze the water through the fabric. Focus on the sweatband interior, which accumulates the most sebum and sweat. Do not scrub the silk surface with any abrasive, do not use a brush, and do not wring or twist the hat at any point. Wringing distorts the silk weave and can damage the hat's structural panels.

Rinse thoroughly in cool water

Detergent residue left in silk degrades the fiber over time. Rinse in fresh cool water until the water runs clear and there is no soapy feel. Multiple gentle rinses are better than one vigorous one.

Do not machine wash

Machine washing, even on a delicate cycle, subjects the hat to mechanical agitation at speeds and forces that distort the silk weave, damage the panel structure, and can felt the silk interior irreversibly. The convenience of a machine wash is not worth the permanent degradation of the materials that make the hat worth owning. Hand washing takes three minutes.

02 · Drying

How to dry the Anti-Breakage Hat correctly

• Press, do not wring. After washing, press the hat gently between your palms or against a clean towel to remove excess water. Never twist or wring. Twisting distorts the panel structure and stresses the silk weave.
• Lay flat or hang to air dry. Place the hat on a clean, dry surface and reshape it to its original form — or hang it from the adjustable strap. Allow it to dry completely at room temperature before wearing or storing.
• No tumble dryer. Heat in a dryer damages both the silk interior and the technical suede exterior. Even a low-heat setting risks shrinking or felting the silk and distorting the hat's shape.
• No direct sunlight during drying. Direct UV exposure degrades silk fiber and can fade the technical suede exterior. Dry indoors or in shade.
• Dry completely before storing. A hat stored before it is fully dry will develop mildew in the interior — the warm, slightly moist environment between silk panels is ideal for mold growth. Full air drying before storage prevents this entirely.

03 · How Often

How often to wash a silk-lined hat

For a hat worn daily, washing every two to four weeks is appropriate for most people. This is significantly less frequent than a cotton hat requires because the silver ion treatment in the Anti-Breakage Hat's lining eliminates 99.9% of the bacteria and fungi that accumulate between wearings. The primary remaining reason to wash is sebum and product buildup in the sweatband area — which is a lower-urgency concern than the microbial accumulation that makes a cotton hat smell and cause scalp irritation between washes.

Wash more frequently if you exercise heavily in the hat or sweat significantly during wearing. Wash immediately if you apply any product to the hat directly rather than to the hair before putting the hat on — product residue in the silk accelerates degradation if left over time.

04 · Storage

How to store the hat

• On a hat form or in a dust bag. A hat stored on a hat form maintains its structured crown shape indefinitely. A dust bag protects the technical suede exterior from dust and abrasion in storage. Either or both are ideal.
• Do not stack heavy objects on top of it. Sustained pressure on the crown distorts the panel structure over time. Store upright or in an upside-down position where the brim can bear the load rather than the crown panels.
• Keep away from direct sunlight during storage. Long-term UV exposure fades technical suede and degrades silk fiber. A closet shelf or drawer is ideal. A hat hook near a sunny window is not.
